  • Home Language Survey:  The initial step is usually a home language survey to identify students who speak a language other than English at home. 

  • Language Proficiency Assessment:  Students identified through the survey are then assessed using a standardized English language proficiency test to determine their level of English proficiency. 

  • "LY" Code:  If a student is determined to need ESOL services, they are coded as "LY" in the system. 

  • Exit from ESOL:  Once a student is deemed proficient in English, their code may change to "LF" indicating they are being monitored for a two-year period after exiting the ESOL program.
